IASTM stands for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. It is an intervention for the treatment of the soft tissues of the body. Instead of the practitioner using their hands he/she will use specially designed tools that are usually made of stainless steel which allow for the detection and treatment of soft tissue disorders. The strokes used are typically short and direct because the practitioner is targeting very specific tissues.
The purpose of the technique and the instruments used is to effectively break down fascial restrictions, adhesions and scar tissue. By working directly upon the restricted tissue, the instruments cause microtrauma to the structure which initiates a healing response from the body. This healing response facilitates the reabsorption of inappropriate fibrosis or excessive scar tissue resulting in a remodelling of the affected area. Once the scar tissue and adhesions are broken down and the remodelling has occurred tissue pliability will improve with a goal of full functional restoration of the area to occur.
