What is Neuromuscular Therapy?
Neuromuscular massage therapy is a targeted and specific form of massage and manual therapy in which the therapist utilizes direct pressure and friction to reduce strain in a muscle and begin to reset the neuromuscular relationship. Neuromuscular therapy is often referred to as trigger point therapy. Trigger points are tender areas of the tissue that tend to be the cause of ongoing muscular pain symptoms. The lack of blood flow and nutrients in that area causes an inability for that muscle to relax, creating a cycle of pain, tension, and sometimes nerve irritation.
Therapists will utilize a variety of assessments to determine the best approach for relieving trigger point induced pain. They will then apply direct techniques to restore balance and provide homework that may include movements to maintain the changes and invigorate tissues that have become weak.
Some key benefits of neuromuscular therapy include:
- Restoring muscular strength
- Reducing ongoing muscular pain
- Alleviating trigger point referrals
- Increased blood flow and recovery to muscles
- Increased energy for daily activities
- Better recovery in sports
If you’ve experience long term pain, spasms, neural irritation, or cyclical pain cycles, Neuromuscular Therapy can begin to break these cycles, including the cycles of pain associated with pathologies such as:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Scoliosis
- Frozen Shoulder
- TMJD
- Chronic Headaches
- Sciatica
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- And much more
