Meet the Leadership Team

Body Heal Therapy is led by David and Ken, whose shared approach is rooted in understanding how the body actually functions — not just where it hurts. With backgrounds in clinical bodywork, movement, and fascia-focused therapy, David founded Body Heal to move beyond routine massage, and together they continue to evolve it into care that is intentional, assessment-driven, and results-oriented. Every session reflects their belief that lasting change comes from addressing patterns, not chasing symptoms — helping clients move better, feel better, and stay that way.

Find the Right Therapist for You

Every practitioner at Body Heal Therapy brings a unique background and specialty — but all share the same commitment to assessment-based, fascia-focused care. Whether you’re managing chronic pain, recovering from training, or building long-term resilience, the right match makes all the difference.

Your progress starts with choosing a therapist who understands your goals.

Ken Smith

Owner – Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist

Ken Smith is a clinician, educator, and co-owner of Body Heal Therapy, bringing over 25 years of experience in bodywork, structural integration, and movement-based care. His path into this work began through personal injury and recovery, shaping a perspective that is both deeply empathetic and clinically driven. Today, Ken co-leads Body Heal Therapy alongside David Phillips, helping guide the company’s vision, practitioner development, and commitment to delivering results-oriented, assessment-based care.

Ken’s journey into bodywork started while serving as a Paramedic/LVN in the United States Air Force, where he sustained a significant back injury that left him questioning whether he would ever return to normal activity. Through his own recovery process, he was introduced to a Physical Therapist and Rolf Structural Integrator who helped resolve his pain and restore function. That experience became a defining moment—leading Ken to pursue advanced training and ultimately dedicate his career to helping others overcome pain and physical limitation.

Over the past two and a half decades, Ken has continued to refine his clinical approach through extensive hands-on experience and advanced education. His work is rooted in structural integration principles, fascia-focused therapy, and a deep understanding of how the body adapts over time. He is known for his ability to identify underlying patterns contributing to pain and dysfunction, rather than focusing solely on symptoms.

Education

Ken earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from Oregon State University, providing a strong academic foundation in human movement, performance, and rehabilitation.

Advanced Training

Ken’s professional development includes extensive study in structural integration, fascia-focused techniques, and interdisciplinary approaches to care. Over the course of his career, he has trained with experienced Osteopaths, Physical Therapists, and leading educators within the Rolf Method Structural Integration community, allowing him to build a comprehensive and adaptable clinical skill set.

Certifications

  • Board Certified International Association of Structural Integrators (Since 2001)
  • Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork #528975-07
  • North Carolina Licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist #1696 (Since 2017)
  • Massage Licensed and Certified in the state of California for over 15 years #4043

Leadership & Philosophy

As part of the leadership team at Body Heal Therapy, Ken plays a key role in mentoring practitioners, developing clinical standards, and elevating the quality of care delivered across the organization. He is deeply committed to moving the profession forward—advocating for thoughtful, individualized treatment over routine or surface-level approaches.

Today

With more than 30 years since his own injury and recovery, Ken continues to live the results of the work he practices—remaining active, training consistently, and applying the same principles he teaches. His work today is driven by a clear mission: to help people move better, feel better, and regain control over their bodies through clinically informed, intentional care.

David Phillips

Founder – Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist

David Phillips is a clinician, educator and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in bodywork, manual therapy, and movement science. In 2019, he co-founded Body Heal Therapy with Ragan Wren to establish a higher standard for bodywork in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. In 2024, Body Heal Therapy welcomed Ken Smith as a new partner, and he now co-operates the company alongside David Phillips. Today, Body Heal Therapy is widely recognized for its clinical depth, practitioner development model, and unwavering commitment to excellence in manual therapy.

David began his professional journey in 2002, driven by a deep fascination with human anatomy and a passion for clinically informed, hands-on care. By 2004, he was actively teaching and practicing full-time, marking the start of what is now over 22 years of teaching experience. Since that time, David has trained and educated thousands of massage therapy graduates, helping shape multiple generations of practitioners entering the massage and bodywork profession.

Throughout his early career, David worked closely with chiropractic physicians, physical therapists, personal trainers, and yoga instructors—an interdisciplinary foundation that continues to inform his integrative, movement-based, and results-oriented approach to care.

Education

David earned his Master of Science in Kinesiology from A.T. Still University, maintaining an active private practice while deepening his exploration of the relationship between movement science, rehabilitation, and manual therapy. He previously completed his Bachelor of Science in Alternative Medicine from Everglades University, further strengthening his academic and clinical foundation.

Advanced Training

His advanced professional training includes completion of the Structural Integration program through Thomas Myers’ Anatomy Trains Structural Integration (ATSI), where he developed a sophisticated understanding of fascial systems, postural organization, and structural dysfunction. He also completed a two-year physical therapy fellowship in sports orthopedic therapy under Dr. Toko Nguyen, expanding his clinical lens into orthopedic assessment, rehabilitation, and performance-based movement strategies.

Additional Certifications

  • Z-Health certifications with Dr. Eric Cobb
  • Osteopathic manual therapy techniques with Dr. Guy Voyer
  • Fascial Counterstrain with Dr. Brian Tuckey
  • Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) certification with Greg Roskopf

Leadership & Education

David is the Director of the North Carolina School of Advanced Bodywork (NCSAB), where he oversees curriculum development, clinical education, and instructor training. He also co-founded the North Carolina School for Structural Integration, a full-immersion postgraduate program designed for licensed professionals seeking to enter and meaningfully contribute to the structural integration community.

Global Experience

Beyond the classroom and clinic, David’s work has taken him into diverse environments—including traveling with a professional cycling team throughout North America and providing therapeutic care to indigenous Aymara communities in the Southern Altiplano of Bolivia. These experiences shaped his adaptability, cultural awareness, and respect for the human body across environments and demands.

Today

Rooted in Charlotte, North Carolina, David continues to blend his passions for clinical excellence, education, and exploration—remaining deeply committed to elevating standards in bodywork while mentoring and training the next generation of therapists.
